These Three is a podcast series in which John Wilson talks to leading artistic figures about their creative lives, key influences and what continues to inspire them. Each guest focuses on three works: one they made, one they wish they’d made, one that they’re making.

GUY GARVEY

GUY GARVEY

In his Brixton writing studio, elbow frontman and lyricist Guy Garvey reveals the inspiration behind one of his band’s best loved songs Lippy Kids. He talks candidly about how personal grief and a feeling of frustration at British politics have led to a darker, more introspective elbow album, the forthcoming Giants Of All Sizes. Guy can’t decide which song he wishes he’d written and so John grants him both wishes.

The song I wrote:
Lippy Kids, Build A Rocket Boys, 2011

The songs I wish I’d written:
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane, 2017
Golden Brown - The Stranglers, 1981

I song we’re writing:
Empires, elbow, 2019

John Wilson says:
”It was an absolute pleasure to get such an insight to Guy’s songwriting process as he led me from scribbled notebooks to iPhone memos to band demos. This is a really candid, intimate and revealing conversation with a generous and big-hearted man.”
